Homework: Daniel Tyler

If I was someone as Powerful as Murdoch, I would use my newspaper to change public opinion of the government, before also using it to organise protests against them. However, I'm not Murdoch, and I wouldn't use my power like that.

Monopoly: the exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.

Conglomerate: a thing consisting of a number of different and distinct parts or items that are grouped together.

Multi-national: a company operating in several countries.

Media Tycoon: media baron

Plurality: the number of votes cast for a candidate who receives more than any other but does not receive an absolute majority.

Public service broadcaster: publicly funded broadcasting

The Mythbusters:

created by Peter Rees and funded by Beyond Television Productions.

The problem with media ownership is that everyone is only focused on the best way to make money, not caring about the people that's see it or who its focused on. For example, the phone hacking scandal was done simply to get a story to sell to newspapers, but violated their personal lives.

My opinion on social media in society.

My opinion of on social media on society is that its quite bad. Sites like Facebook and other social media sites are taking over people lives. May people are obsessed with posting stuff on Facebook and twitter to the point where they spend 90% of their lives on that specific site. I do however think that there are good sides to having social media in society, one of that positives is that you can communicate with people you wouldn't normally be able to have  a conversation with ; such as someone that may have recently moved to a different country you will be able to talk to them without stupidly high text and call prices if you are on a pay as you go plan. Another good side is that it allows you to see what your friend and family are up to and can keep up to date with their lives without actually conversing with the person however, this could be a downside because it reduces the amount of social interactions you have with people because you can just find everything out via statuses and tweets that said person has post. These are just some of the reasons why my opinion is quite mixed, but i believe that site like Facebook are in general just bad for society as a whole because, it discourages people to actually converse. It also lets you put anything you want about anyone, so there is really no privacy at all. The negatives far out weight the positives of having social media in society.

3)

I have noticed that i spend a little amount of time but then i revisited the site again for a little while.

When visiting these websites i am usually doing it in my free time, as i believe that if you are having dinner while on the internet then its anti-social and its not a good thing. I think that i sometimes waste my time on certain things like facebook and thing like that but something i go on are for school etc.

MEDIA OWNERSHIP: Who owns what and does it matter?

1.  Research who Rupert Murdoch is. Make a mind-map (using https://www.text2mindmap.com/) of his companies, who runs them and in which countries he has businesses.
  • Add a screen grab or a link of/to your mind map on your blog.

EXTENSION: Search for and read, ‘BBC News Murdoch attack on 'dominant' BBC’ (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8227915.stm).
Answer the following questions:
(a) In your own words, what are the points he makes about the BBC’s power?
(b)  What do you think? Does the BBC have too much power and should we have the licence fee?

2.  Imagine you are someone as powerful as Rupert Murdoch. You have decided you do not like the government in Britain. Think of ways you can USE the media YOU own to convince your readers and viewers that the government is no good.

3.  Media terminology: find out what the following words mean…

MONOPOLY                CONGLOMERATE                   MULTI-NATIONAL
MEDIA TYCOON         PLURALITY                              PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTER

4.  Pick one of the TV channels you have watched. Do some research into who owns it - how they are funded?

  • Present your findings in any way you wish on your blogsite.

5.  Watch this video: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zn6vcdm.
  • Use 5-10 bullet points to summarise the main issues the video presents.

6.  Consider everything that you have learnt over the last half term, through this project, what do you think are the main issues related to media ownership?
  • Explain, in full sentences (on your blog), giving evidence to support your points.

Is Social Media "Social"

My opinion is mixed on this statement. I do believe that now social media has gotten a little out of hand with Facebook having over a billion users everyday and other networks such as twitter and instagram close behind social media has in fact become unsocial. I think this as the question of how many friends you have on Facebook and how many you actually talk to. after all even if you talking all it is are pixels on a screen. From my experiences i have never recently had a conversation with someone or spent a day with someone without them picking up their phone and checking what's happening on Facebook. i myself try to avoid this as its completely avoiding the fact of social media. For example when you arrange to meet up with someone on Facebook most likely at some time they will check Facebook again for no reason even if you have already met up with them and the whole use of Facebook was to arrange to meet with you and be social however they completely blank out the world and use social media to escape the reality of having no technology for just a few hours. however responding to this point people from all over the world can contact each other in less than a minute which is truly amazing. Many people have met some amazing characters from all over the world using social media. plus this fact information is being spread faster than ever you can know anything that is going on by simply typing in the address or clicking on that f in the bottom corner of your iPhone or Samsung is a statement to what humans can achieve in just a decade. "It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity" - Albert Einstein.

My opinion on social media in society.

I agree massively with the statement "social networks don't bring us closer together" it's quite possibly the truest statement I've seen on paper in a long time. Whilst social networking is a fantastic tool for staying in touch quickly and efficiently, with friends across the globe, it's also a form of escapism for keyboard warriors, who cannot face real life. Social networks are a way to say things to other people in a way that masks inner feeling, but in my opinion, you're not saying it to the person on the other side of the web, you're talking to a screen with no feelings which aparantly suffices for human emotion. People of emotional capability are becoming vastly desensitized to others opinions and values due to the lack of emotional prosperity in solical networks.
I understand how others may believe websites such as Twitter and Facebook are fantastic for "keeping updated" and yes I agree they are, however, some people take this "keeping updated" to an extreme level thus demolishing their ability to understand others and their feelings.
I think that social networks are good as long as face to face communication is kept intact. As soon as the facal communication is lost so is the humanity.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND MY INTERNET USE!

WILF: You to think about how you use the internet and what the implications of this are.

1.  Keep a log of every website you visit over a 24hr period (don’t worry about search engines such as Google). You may wish to record it like this:

Time
Website
Estimated length of time
Device
8.00am
Facebook
13mins
laptop
8.19am
Gmail
6mins
Smartphone

2.  Create a wordle of the websites you visited. If you visited Twitter more than once then write into your word box as many times as you used it (www.wordle.net)

Post it on your blogger site.

3.  Write a blog post about what you have noticed about your internet use. Think about the amount of times you visit certain websites, how long you spend on the sites and what you use. You may wish to also think about the following questions:

-What are you doing when visiting these websites? For example, are you sat having food with your family and if so, is this a good thing?

- Do you think you waste time on the internet or do you think your use is ‘useful’?

4.  Analyse your own Facebook or Twitter page. How many times have you or friends shared any of the following?

- A news article or campaign (such as the Joseph Kony video from a few years ago)

- A music video or a song

- A funny video

- An advert or a commercial product (eg. A picture of some new trainers you want)

Write your answer to the following question on your blogger page:

Q. Why do you and other people share these types of media? Who benefits?

5.  You have just been given a job by an independent (smaller) record company to promote the label and its artists on social media (Facebook/Twitter etc). On your blog page write down 5 things you would do and why. For example, ‘Give away a free song if you ‘like’ the record label Facebook page. This would then give us direct access to the customers who actually like our music.

6.  On the GCSE Blogger page add your opinion to the debate about social media: ‘Social Networks don’t bring us closer together as we now talk through computers rather than to each other.’ (http://www.debate.org/opinions/does-the-internet-bring-people-closer-together)

Read the main point in the post and other pupils’ responses. In your response, try and refer to two other classmates’ views.

I agree with Steven that we may use Facebook to arrange a social event – whether it’s going to the cinema or to get a group to go to a gig or something. Therefore, it can be seen as a way to organise activities with friends rather than replace them. However, I think sometimes I’ll be walking with a friend but messaging a friend on my phone which is perhaps a bit rude.
